How to Spot Swirl Marks on Your Car Before They Get Worse

To check for swirl marks, park the car in the shade or at night and shine a flashlight across the paint at a low angle, roughly parallel to the surface rather than pointing straight at it. Swirl marks show up as a web of fine circular or criss-crossing scratches that catch and scatter the light instead of reflecting it cleanly. Dark colors like black, navy and dark red show this most clearly; light colors like white or silver hide it better but still have it. Direct sunlight works the same way as the flashlight, which is why swirl marks often look worst on a bright, sunny day right after a wash, when the paint should look its cleanest. Once you can see them, a wash or wax won't fix them, because they're physical scratches in the clear coat, not surface residue. Paint correction is the only process that actually removes them, by machine-polishing down to a fresh, unscratched layer of clear coat.
